Using methane sensibly

Terra Mater TV report: “Methan sinnvoll nutzen”

An innovative method for splitting methane without CO2 emissions and thus producing hydrogen and solid, high-purity carbon is being tested at RAG Energy Valley. This approach makes it possible, on the one hand, to store surplus electricity generated in summer for use in winter heating through hydrogen production, and on the other hand, to extract valuable carbon as a soil additive for agriculture.

RAG expert Markus Kainz explains in the ServusTV science magazine "Terra Mater" how this is possible using the innovative technology of methane electrolysis

In collaboration with Robert Obenaus-Emler from the Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL), the hydrogen is separated from the carbon in a filter system, making both substances usable.
