Shaping the energy future

RAG's Energy World

RAG – Renewables and Gas

RAG Austria AG is Austria’s largest energy storage company, and one of Europe’s leading gas storage facility operators.

Our business focus is market driven storage, conversion and conditioning of energy in gaseous forms.

We also develop leading edge energy technologies related to green gas like hydrogen that partner renewables.

Ground-breaking ceremony for Austria’s largest green hydrogen production plant:

  • RAG Austria are expanding together with Andritz the electrolysis facility at RAG Valley Gampern (Upper Austria) from 2.5 MW to 15 MW.
  • Winter 2025/26 makes it clear: massive dependence on imports for electricity supply cannot be resolved through wind power expansion or battery and pumped-storage solutions – gas storage facilities and power stations have maintained supply.
  • An integrated energy system comprising renewable generation, storage and energy use is urgently needed in Austria.
  • RAG Valley Gampern had already demonstrated in the winter of 2025/26 how solar power generated in the summer could be stored and used in the winter – a solution that is now being scaled up further.
  • Strengthening regional industry through the consistent scaling up of green hydrogen production

Electrolyzes convert domestic solar power into a storable energy carrier, which is why I wholeheartedly welcome the project in Gampern.

It's time: Thinking about winter during summer

RAG Austria uses surplus energy from the summer and stores it for the winter in the form of hydrogen. With our innovative technologies and clear regulatory framework, we can

  • reduce our dependence on energy imports,
  • green the gas,
  • drive the roll-out of hydrogen efficiently and sustainably, and
  • ease the strain on the electricity grids.

LAT Nitrogen and RAG Austria launch partnership for hydrogen solutions in Linz

In April 2026, LAT Nitrogen and RAG Austria agreed a strategic partnership to develop sustainable hydrogen solutions for the industrial hub of Linz. The aim is to ensure a reliable supply of CO₂-free hydrogen from surplus Austrian electricity, thereby driving forward the decarbonisation of industry and strengthening regional value creation.

As a first step, the Linz site will be partially supplied with CO₂-free hydrogen; a full supply is planned in the long term. In addition to electrolysis, the partnership also focuses on innovative technologies such as methane splitting. The carbon produced in this process is to be used in future, in combination with products from LAT Nitrogen, for sustainable agricultural applications. The agreement was sealed by the signing of a letter of intent in the presence of Federal Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer.

„H2 cross border“ - hydrogen delivery from Austria to Germany still faces hurdles - Germany lacks a register of origin

The “H2 cross border” hydrogen project successfully maps the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transport and delivery to the end consumer. It shows that the cross-border pipeline transport of green hydrogen from Austria to Germany is possible under the existing technical and regulatory framework. At the same time, it is clear that the market ramp-up continues to be slowed down by a lack of regulatory requirements, in particular the lack of a register of origin in Germany.

H2EU+Store: Feasibility study confirms great potential for green hydrogen from western Ukraine

The international industry partnership H2EU+Store has completed its feasibility study. The study examined all key areas of the entire hydrogen value chain – from production and transport to potential consumption (upstream, midstream and customer demand).

The results show that green, RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) compliant hydrogen can be produced on a large scale at competitive prices in western Ukraine and transported to Central Europe via existing infrastructure.
