Geothermal energy

Geothermal site Blumau

Since its foundation in 1935, RAG has drilled over 800 wells in depths of up to 4600 meters, gaining valuable insight into thermal, medicinal mineral and drinking water reserves, discovering enormous underground water reservoirs at several million cubic meters.

At depths of 1,000 m such water reaches 40 to 50 °C, in 2,000 m up to 100 °C have been observed.

Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly, and can be used for applications including the space heating, greenhouses, fish breeding facilities or even bathhouses.

Wells drilled by RAG have been turned into successful geothermal projects in the municipalities of Geinberg, Obernberg, and Weibern in Upper Austria as well as in Waltersdorf, Blumau, and Loipersdorf in Styria. The hot water produced is used for heating, balneological, and health spa purposes.

Medicinal water from wells (balneology)

The water reservoirs discovered by RAG wells (basically fossil sea water) supply not only thermal energy. During the millions of years spent in the rocks, the water has been enriched with minerals and trace elements, with iodine of special significance.

Iodine-containing thermal waters have a strong medicinal effect for treating coronary and vascular diseases, eye complaints and problems of the locomotor and respiratory systems.

The effect of the medicinal water of the Bad Hall health resort is based mainly on its iodine content. The resort operation is substantially supported by three former RAG wells. Likewise, the thermal water resorts of Loipersdorf, Waltersdorf, and Blumau are fed by RAG wells. Tourism in the entire region was strongly stimulated by developing the wells into full-scale health spas.

With our numerous wells and seismic surveys RAG is in a position to provide precise information about the depth and extension of such water reservoirs.

Please contact us if you are interested in one of the above applications. We would be delighted to inform you if an appropriate well is available near you, or what indication for a successful now well are possible.
