The 7Fields underground gas storage facility is a joint venture project of RAG and its German partner E.ON Gas Storage GmbH (EGS). In this project RAG is planner, constructor and technical operator. Capacities will be offered to the market by EGS. This project shall be implemented in several stages. The implementation of the first stage started in 2009 and was completed on 1st of April 2011. About 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas will be stored by completion of the final stage.
The 7Fields underground gas storage facility is formed of several former natural gas reservoirs in Upper Austria and Salzburg. The reservoirs and their facilities are connected by pipelines to a central collection and metering station as well as to the international gas grid system.
The integration of several underground gas storage facilities to a single gas storage facility unit is especially environmental friendly and resource-saving. Such approach is unique in Europe.
